North West Region U3A Summer School 2024 - Report by Mandy King
This year was the 3rd time I have attended the NW Region U3A Summer school.
The first time was in 2017 and with a gap of Covid etc, I decided to apply for this year’s (2024) summer school in Carlisle.
At first, it wasn’t definite if it would run, as Alan Hough, who organised it, wasn’t sure if sufficient numbers would apply.
I first heard about the U3A Summer schools from “Third Age Matters” magazine, but very little is mentioned locally and for the second time, I was the only person from Sale U3A who attended.
Approximately 100 U3A members from all over the North West attended and it was interesting to meet other people and hear about the different activities in their groups.
Six topics were offered at the summer school, so we could choose what to “study” over the 3 days. I chose Archaeology, as it’s something I know nothing about. Other topics were Art Challenge; Japan; Advanced ukelele; Literature; British Artists. The topics change each year.
Accommodation was in the student residential blocks with ensuite rooms and we used the lecture rooms and dining rooms of the University of Cumbria in Carlisle.
On the first afternoon, after arrival and checking in and finding our rooms, we met the tutor, who outlined the following 2 days itinerary.
Our group had both days as field trips and went by coach to several very interesting places.
For example, we explored a 3,000 year old Neolithic Stone circle called Long Meg and her 68 daughters.
Then we saw the Mayborough Henge and King Arthur’s Round Table. (I now know the difference between a Stone Circle and a Henge)!
We also explored 2 Roman forts on Hadrian’s Wall- Vindolanda and Corbridge.
Of course, time for coffee breaks and places to eat our packed lunch were woven into the day.
The evenings were spent enjoying chatting over the dinner in the huge refectory and then joining the optional quiz or listening to a guest speaker.
It was only 3 nights and 2 action packed interesting days but I can recommend the experience. I travelled by direct train from Manchester to Carlisle and from the station, it was a very short taxi ride to the campus.
Coming home, four of us shared a taxi and carried on chatting, until our trains arrived.
We were invited to make suggestions for future topics for next year’s Summer school and I suggested “Recorder playing”. But I can recommend choosing something totally new.
